Mother Can You Hear Me
Published in Hardcover by Everest House (July, 1983)
Author: Elizabeth Allen
Average review score:

Most moving, and best written book on an adoptee reunion
Elizabeth Allen's "Mother Can You Hear Me" is the author's true and heart-wrenching story. While told by Allen, an adoptee, of her search and reunion with her birthmother, it is in fact the story of the pain and anguish, injustice and cruelty in the life of a deaf girl who was not only made to surrender her child but who was institutionalized for most of her life. You will never forget the heartfelt meetings between this mother and her long lost child only days before her death. This is a book that anyone touched by adoption, or anyone with a heart will cherish forever. The best of its genre. Well worth seeking out.

Mr. Archimedes' Bath
Published in Paperback by Angus & Robertson (October, 1991)
Author: Pamela Allen
Average review score:

Eureka!
By the author of 'Who Sank The Boat?' This is a fun way of learning about Archimedes Principle. He hops in and out of a bath with, variously a kangaroo, goat and wombat, examining the water level each time, and trying to understand why when ALL the friends are in the bath it always overflows.

Well illustrated. And, yes, he shouts "EUREKA!"

Mrs. Simkin's Bed
Published in Library Binding by William Morrow (August, 1980)
Author: Linda. Allen
Average review score:

Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful!
This book is a complete delight. Children enjoy it (at least mine do), but so will adults because it's just so darn appealing. The story is a hoot, and the art adds immeasurably to the charm. (Look at the details in the pictures; read the headlines in the newspaper the father reads. It's all hysterical.)Why this book is out of print, I can't imagine.

Murder on the Mauretania
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Minotaur (December, 1900)
Authors: Conrad Allen, Genevieve Masefield, and George Porter Dillman
Average review score:

Lots of excitement in this mystery
In late 1907 Liverpool, the maiden voyage of the world's largest ocean liner, the Mauretania begins. Among the passengers is detective George Porter Dillman sailing in second class and his new assistant Genevieve Masefield staying in first class. George and Genevieve met on the Lusitania (see MURDER ON THE LUSITANIA). They are working undercover for the Cunard Line to prevent robberies of the wealthy patrons from thieves that are plowing their trades and to protect a 2.75 million-pound gold shipment.

As the ship sails, George stops minor pilfering from happening, but an unknown phantom continues to steal in spite of the detective's efforts. The weather for the most part is nasty, but the powerful Mauretania keeps a steady pace. However, the calm changes when a first class passenger falls overboard in what appears to be a tragic accident. However, Sam soon sees a connection with that incident and the clever stealing of some of the gold. Even with Genevieve's access to the wealthy first class patrons, Sam struggles to identify a master felon.

MURDER ON THE MAURETANIA, the second Dillman-Masefield historical mystery set on the ocean cruise liners, is a wonderful tale that brings readers along for the ride sans seasickness. The story line is entertaining as readers obtain a glimpse at the ship, its passengers, and its crew mostly through the eyes of the undercover sleuth and his assistant. The enjoyable who-done-it adds to the fun of an exciting sea voyage. Sub-genre fans will book passage on Conrad Allen's next ocean adventure.

A good, fast read
This is a female private-eye mystery. I love this type. It just seems to move right along and leaves you out of breath at the end.

For the lovers of wholesome whodunit, I highly rate this one.

Multilingual FSI: Swedish Basic Course (15 Cassettes)
Published in Spiral-bound by Multilingual Books and Tapes (01 January, 1998)
Authors: Margereta Weyl, Margareta Feller, Anne-Marie Carnemark, Ingrid Beach, and Allen Weinstein
Average review score:

Not worth the money
This course is 30 years old, one tape was totally blank, all tapes use only half the space on the tape so really it is only about seven tapes, one side of one tape was virtually inaudible. Look at other programs than this one.

Its a Must Buy
I have used the very fine Pimsleur course for another language (Hebrew) but, in looking for a course that costs a fraction of the Pimsleur price, I struck gold with the Berlitz Basic Spanish. There are 24 lessons, each about 7 minutes long. The lessons are divided into scenes on three audio tapes. The lessons are taught entirely in Spanish. It is amazing how well this works by putting the conversation in context and by using a guidebook. By going through each lesson several times and doing the exercises in the book, you learn Spanish in an easy and enjoyable manner, Having used Pimsleur, I believe that dollar for dollar, the Berlitz method compares well. You can't go wrong with either {Pimsleur or Berlitz) but, for less than 30 bucks, your money is very well spent with the Berlitz basic Spanish. The big difference between these two fine methods (Berlitz & Pimsleur) is the following: (1) Pimsleur has a series of 32 longer lessons in which the language is taught using both English and the language you are learning on the tape. The Pimsleur lessons are about a half hour long. (2) The series of Berlitz lessons are about 7 or so minutes long and no English is spoken. The accompanying book provides English translation in marginal notes for new words that are introduced into the vocabulary. Both programs are effective but Berlitz is a great bargain.
